Tai Chi Instructor Training and Scholarships Available for Older Adults
Lakeland, FL.-June 7, 2017 – Senior Connection Center, (SCC), is now offering scholarships for people to become trained as Tai Chi instructors for older adults. “Tai Chi is a gentle form of exercise that helps improve flexibility, strength, and coordination,” says Jamie Baker-Douglin, Director of Healthcare Initiatives for SCC. “But Tai Chi has the proven added benefit of improving balance and preventing falls, especially for older adults.”
An instructor certification training for Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention will be held July 1 – 2, 2017 at Florida Presbyterian Homes (McArthur Center), 811 Lakeside Ave. in Lakeland, FL. The cost is $200.00 plus the cost of materials. A small number of scholarships are available through SCC. Scholarship recipients are expected attend the full 2-day training and to teach at least 50 hours of Tai Chi for SCC clients. Any instructors who teach for SCC clients, regardless of whether or not they receive a scholarship, will receive a stipend of $10 per instruction hour plus mileage to class sites.
“We are looking for people who have a passion for working with older adults to help expand our Tai Chi program in every county that we serve,” says Baker. “Our instructors keep telling us that teaching these classes is as rewarding for them as it is helpful to the participants.”
SCC also schedules classes at local community centers, living facilities, clinics, churches, and other community locations throughout Hillsborough, Manatee, Polk, Highlands, and Hardee counties. Those who are interested in attending this training or applying for a scholarship should contact Jamie Baker-Douglin, Director of Healthcare Initiatives, at 813-676-5566, or Jamie.Baker-Douglin@sccmail.org for further information.
